The Mediterranean diet is arguably one of the most renowned for its heart health benefits. It is the diet advocated by UK cardiologist Dr Aseem Malhotra, who is campaigning for a change to our dietary guidelines in favour of real food!
A study in the Lancet (a medical journal) showed that the Med diet could potentially halve heart attack rates and is significantly more effective than standard low fat food choices. As the name suggests, it is inspired by the local foods of Greece, Southern Italy and Spain. Think of an array of colourful vegetables, tantalising fruits, fresh olives and olive oil, fish, cheese, meats, pulses, whole grains and fresh herbs. Simply scrumptious!
