Yoga props

If you’re new to yoga, you may be wondering what kit you need to take part. Whilst it is great to have ‘proper’ yoga gear we also include household props to get you started in your at-home practice.

You can purchase yoga props online here:

A mat: easily available online – useful to make your practice more comfortable.

A strap or belt: mainly used for stretching and to achieve a wider range of motion. Yoga belts have a quick release buckle, but any strap will do – such as from a dressing gown, a pilates band or scarf.

Yoga blocks: these help to make poses more accessible by providing length, support and proper alignment. They also allow you to stay in the poses for longer. A full set is 4 usually foam blocks, size 30cm x 20cm. However initially you could get away with 2 blocks. As an alternative you could use a heavy book, protein powder pot, small stool or chair.

Yoga bricks: not essential in the early stages of yoga practice – bricks are shorter and steadier than blocks and help to stabilise your stretches. Typically 22cm x 9cm but they may also be wider.

Blanket: any blanket will do to allow you to be comfortable in relaxation. Not essential at this time of year!

Eye bag: totally non-essential but rather delightful to allow a deeper relaxation.

Just one more thing: it is useful to have a small amount of wall space, door frame or kitchen cabinet to improve access to some of our postures. If this is not possible please have a chair or table in mind that is stable.
